Just as you guys don´t feel alone in your bickering, I hereby inform
you that the local contactless cards system for buses, subway and
metro trains in the Buenos Aires area (dubbed SUBE) is exactly as you
have described. http://www.sube.gov.ar

AFAIK technically it´s a 125 Khz RFID card

As usual, I can´t provide answers about Australian stuff but
comparisons of striking similarities from the other side of the
globe...
