That's good and all but Gmail has supported IMAP for a long time (ok the
IMAP is apparently a little non-standard but at least one Linux based IMAP
client understands the differences). It should be possible to connect to
Gmail IMAP with a tool like imapsync to backup email in Gmail. I've been
using this approach with Yahoo mail for a family member for quite some
time.

IMAP is really the canonical way to migrate email. The biggest problem
with migrating email is format conversion and guess what IMAP does? :)

Cheers,

Rob
