I'm with you on this, Tom. As I said in a prior message, the changes 
from last year look to be about making it pretty rather than 
functional. For absolutely critical information like where fires are 
*right now*, it's important to reduce the amount of page overhead as 
much as possible and cut to the chase. Focus the attention, get to 
the facts, strip out the 'nice to have', and data will be served 
faster. Standard website designers won't have this in mind, but those 
who design for accessibility are the ones to listen to. Are there any 
of those latter types left?

Complexity is the enemy in life and death situations.
