[LINK] Qld govt moving to the cloud

There's a potential for significant savings when a lot of small agencies
share a service rather than having a whole bunch of individual IT
departments selecting, installing and maintaining what is a pretty standard
service. If it is done right, there is also a saving because the array of
variants of the various mail services gets reduced down to a standardised
set of service offerings. Achieving this requires a slightly dictatorial
approach, rather than trying work out how to to support all current
functionality so no one feels upset.

I'm not sure that the "cloud" would, of itself, make things cheaper since
the Queensland government is already big enough to reap most of the
economies of scale. However, you do get the advantage of being able to
offer up a big visible contract that might generate some real competition.
