I just got a new visa card and it's one of those NFC paywave cards.
I had a quick look online and apparently you can ask your bank to reduce the paywave limit to $1.
I also got a powerful torch and had a look at what was inside it. I can see coils and what looks to me like a capacitor. It's quite complex in there, not like the simple coils I've seen in xrays of RFID cards online. https://imageshack.us/a/img89/4470/cardswb.jpg
I'll try and get the bank to give me one without the paywave first, and if not limit it second but I still resent carrying around a card that will respond to a radio signal without me being aware of it.
I'm pretty sure a very small hole drilled through the card at a particular spot would take out the paywave leaving the chip and mag stripe unscathed but would it still be valid? Perhaps not noticeably invalid.
