Thousands of Victorians have had their phone and internet connections
disconnected after several telecommunications companies went into
administration on Friday.
It is estimated that as many as 10,000 people have had their access
to phone and Internet disconnected.
Businesses and residents on Phillip Island, who who were connected
via iBoss International, are among those affected.
Waterfront Computers, a service provider based on the island,
reported that about 500 internet and 300 phone of its customers had
been disconnected.
"We're in disaster mode here," owner Steve Murphy said.
"Unfortunately these things take time to fix. It's been affecting our
business massively."
He said the services were disconnected without warning at 3.30pm on
Friday and he was trying to transfer those affected to another
carrier, which would likely take a few days.
"We're in a really bad situation here. It has nothing to do with us.
We pay our bills but we are being held to ransom because of the
carrier and it is not right."
Tim Swallow, director of a Phillip Island resort, said many
businesses on the island were affected, as well as scores of retirees.
"We don't know if anybody has booked with us since yesterday
afternoon, whether anybody is coming in today and whether we should
get rooms ready," he said.
In a statement Telstra said three telecommunications companies had
gone into administration: AsiaPac Communications, iBoss International
and OneTelecom. "We do not have any contracts in place for the supply
of Telstra Wholesale services with any these three entities," the
statement said.
