Yes, chop them.

Perhaps we need an automated oration facility for long term linkers
(those on the list for more than three years, who have made more than 30
posts).
This would detect someone absent from the list for an extended period
(Google's inactive account manager has a default of three months) and
post an overview of their contributions as a farewell: "... joined the
list in ... their first post was on ... they made a total of ... posts,
their last was on ... in ...".
That might prompt people to say "I am not dead!" or, regrettably, in
some cases have an acquaintance confirm the sad news.
