[LINK] Any way to save a tablet?

Hi guys
I have a technical question. Tried to work through w/ Brenda, but need a wider knowledge base.

Bauhn, Android 4.1, 8" tablet
Probably 18 months old. Under 2 years at least.

Booting is flakey -- sometimes gets through the full process. Allows one or two screen taps, then freezes. Programs don't load. Only way to shut it off is a hard press on the on/off physical button for 5+ seconds. Boot up goes through the Bauhn/Android process, then may get to the unlock but no further. Sometimes gets to the show apps screen. But that's about it.

Brenda suggested:
a) drain battery and recharge
or
b) a reset, which I assume will lose all that I've installed????

Any advice? It's my ebook reader, nothing much more than that, but if it can be saved, would like to.
