There's a considerable, and perhaps burgeoning, collection of longitudinal studies, and the ABS invokes the obligatoriness factor that they have arranged to have in their legislation.

These have caused a lot of grief to a lot of people.
I should add that I'm not aware of the selection of subjects departing from the conventional 'random within targeted population' principles, and instead being used for revenge.
