IMHO, machine learning is purely a matter of data analysis and "curve"
fitting. A somewhat more advanced version of regression analysis.

Human learning and intelligence is a combination of the construction of
mental models and parameter estimation. Machine learning is mostly (if
not entirely) parameter estimation.
