it's both. the technology is crappy and/or deliberately compromised
(with backdoors, security holes, and spyware) AND the implementors are
idiots or negligent or both.
on a more general note:
IOT is a way to get citizens and consumers to pay for and install
surveillance devices in their own homes themselves, saving spooks and
marketers the expense and trouble.
and consumers lap it up - who cares if their fridge uploads pictures of
them getting a midnight snack while naked to some server in china if
they get to see their facebook feed scrolling on the fridge door? or if
their xbox is listening in on their conversations and uploading them to
microsoft servers if they can save themselves the enormous trouble of
actually pushing an on/off button (ditto iphones and apple servers)
of course, they don't typically know these things are happening - but
if and when they find out, they don't immediately smash the offending
device with a sledge-hammer (or, more sensibly, return it for a refund),
they keep on using them.
