There are some some modems which have a cordless phone base station 
built it, so you do not need an extra box.

It would be prudent to have battery backup on the modem and cordless 
phone base station, to be able to make calls during a blackout.

It is also useful to have at least one wired phone, so you can find the 
phone in an emergency.

That said, I disconnected my FTTN phone after a few years and just used 
the mobile. That was 13 years ago and I have not missed having a home phone.
