South Korea is a whisker over 100,000 Km^2 in area with a population of around 52 million, and Australia is 76.9 times the area with around one-half the population, most of it in the capital cities. Any telecoms company would be happy to run a network in metropolitan Sydney, but how many would bother with communications in Backof Beyond?
And a country with independent carriers runs the risk of having poorly integrated infrastructure with poor standards compliance unless there's a very good level of regulation. However regulation is being deliberately eroded in Australia with the proclaimed intention of removing "business bottlenecks".
