This is a follow-up to an earlier query concerning the origins of Pikinini.
The OU Dictionary of Historical Principles, 3rd Rev. Ed., 1955
says:Piccaninny, pickaninny -- 1657 [A West Indian Negro deriv. of Sp.
pequeno or Pg pegueno little, small] A little one, a child; applied esp. to
the children of negroes, or of South African or Australian Natives.
