What's this phenomenon?

John,
I submit that the /has~as/ alternation is nothing new. I remember in
the 70's having particular trouble with /hailans/ and /ailans/. My
recollection is that both could mean either Highlands or Islands, the latter
refering to Bismark Archipelago. The distinctions among glottal stop onset,
[h], or actual vowel initial onset does not seem to bear a heavy
phonological load anywhere in the country.
cheers,
Piet
