Dear John and others,
Right before I left PNG in Feb 2000 I saw a whole series of comic books in
Tok Pisin related to health issues. One of the local favorites was
"dakglasman" a comic about a wealthy guy with a Toyota landcruiser that had
tinted windows (hence the dakglas), he would drive around spreading HIV to
young ladies enamored with his car. It shouldn't be too hard to track down
some of these publications.
I think the birua theme is interesting, outside of Goroka along the highway
there is a huge billboard of a guy all dressed up to fight with banara,
spia, etc. Over the top of him, in fact encasing him, is a giant condom. I
wish I could remember the saying underneath it, but it's definitely related
to HIV being like a birua, and condoms being like shields.
