According to my notes for 3 September 1986 at Tumba (see photo accompanying 'plang' entry) Daniel's memory lapse can be mended with 'mengal tand'. Indeed this bamboo sheath is the name for the little zigzags along the top of the war shields which look like 'mengal tand'.

According to Daniel Gonno, a Wahgi himself, this is a leaf of a plant that
grows like a bamboo but much smaller and shorter. Sorry, he has forgotten the
Wahgi name for it, and no idea about its botanical name!
