A new meaning for mange/manki?
In February 2003, an Australian volunteer couple went to Lumi (West Sepik
Province) to work on a project for the conservation of "tenkile", the tree
kangaroo species (Dendrolagus scottae) restricted to that area. In
November, they reported:
"After going on patrol to three eastern villages to conduct distance
sampling, Jim was given the name mange bilong mountain ("big hairy yeti of
the mountains") by the villagers "
(see Thomas, Jim and Jean 2004. "Paw prints of a legend." Australia
Volunteers International Magazine (Autumn 2004), 18-19, quote on p. 19).
