Colleagues
Divine Word and I have just had an approach from Ian Harding of J. Wiley of
which Jacaranda, the publisher of the 1971 edition of Mihalic's dictionary,
is now a subsidiary imprint.
The upshot is that they are proposing a school-type dictionary and they want
it on a certain timeframe. Evidently there is a ready market for this type
of production, running to some thousands of copies. The problem is how to
meet such a deadline while doing the type of patient editorial work that is
needed to revise the 1971 edition.
At the moment I think it would be possible to complete a 'first pass' of the
lexicon by the end of this year, which basically means accounting for all of
Mihalic's head entries (discarding some, adding others). It does not allow
for the fuller treatment of the language that we need to do over longer
period of time.
I am engaging further consultation with DWU over this. A concern is how to
protect the IP of the work we have done so far.
