Title : “Towards a more resilient Pacific – the role of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) ”

ABSTRACT
This presentation will introduce the environmental challenges facing the Pacific region and the work of SPREP in addressing them. The Pacific is a vast region, covering 34% of the earth’s surface, and faces serious threats from: environmental degradation; climate change, identified by Pacific Island leaders an issue of national security; and challenges such as solid and hazardous waste. These are compounded by realities of limited capacity and vast distances.
This presentation will outline SPREP’s responses, including through the Pacific Adaptation to Climate Change (PACC) Programme and increasing efforts to apply ecosystem based approaches, including more effective conservation of nature, as a front line response to environmental change.
The presentation will also outline SPREP’s aim of increasing partnerships and cooperation with Australian research institutions to better support programme delivery in Pacific countries.
