CONSULTATIONS FOR THE WORLD HUMANITARIAN SUMMIT
[X]
I am writing to you to inform you about the World Humanitarian Summit<http://www.worldhumanitariansummit.org/> which will be held next May, in Istanbul, to improve global humanitarian action and better meet the needs of millions of people affected by conflicts and disasters. It is the first global summit on humanitarian action of this size and will build on eight regional consultations and inclusive outreach efforts.
Australia, through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), is proud to be co-hosting the Pacific Regional Consultation with New Zealand and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). A Regional Steering Group has been established to guide the consultation process, with representatives from Member States, civil society, private sector, academia, regional organizations, Red Cross and the United Nations.
In recognition of your expertise in the Pacific region and/or humanitarian issues, I am writing to you to encourage your participation in the preparatory Consultation process through:
* online forums;
* written submissions (including innovative ideas to improve humanitarian action in the Pacific);
* sharing this information widely in your networks; and
* submitting expression of interest in attending the Pacific Consultation.
Online Forums
First, there is an online forum<http://www.worldhumanitariansummit.org/whs_pacific?utm_source=PAC&utm_medium=banner&utm_campaign=WHS_FrontPage&utm_content=Banner+Click> running from 11-29 May which aims to gather ideas and recommendations from a broad section of society on how to keep humanitarian action fit for purpose in responding to crises in the Pacific. This complements global online forums<http://www.worldhumanitariansummit.org/sitemap> on humanitarian effectiveness; reducing vulnerability and managing risk; transformation through innovation; and serving the needs of people in conflict.
Short Submissions
Second, OCHA would welcome short submissions and recommendations before 31 May 2015 in the lead up to the Pacific Regional Consultation, will be held in Auckland from 30 June to 2 July 2015. These submissions would help identify key issues for the Regional Consultation to focus upon. All inputs received will form part of a stakeholder consultation report that will be disseminated at the Regional Consultation. A scoping paper<http://www.worldhumanitariansummit.org/file/491365/view/535441> outlining key issues under consideration is available which could inform submissions.
Further information can be sought from Ms Elisabeth McLeod (mcleode at un.org<mailto:mcleode at un.org>), Team Leader for the World Humanitarian Summit Regional Consultation for the Pacific. You may also wish to contact Dr Graham Sem from the University of Papua New Guinea (gsem at extra.co.nz<mailto:gsem at extra.co.nz>) and Professor Vijay Naidu, University of the South Pacific (naidu_v at usp.ac.fj<mailto:naidu_v at usp.ac.fj>) who are the academic representatives on the Regional Steering Group to discuss your views.
We would be interested to know of any recommendations that you make to ensure that we are informed and can take them into account through our own participation at the Auckland meeting. Please cc Pia.Simonsen at dfat.gov.au<mailto:Pia.Simonsen at dfat.gov.au> on any submissions.
We are also keen to uncover any existing innovative ideas that address problems communities face before, during and after disasters. DFAT's InnovationXchange<https://innovationxchange.dfat.gov.au/> is running an Innovation exercise<http://www.worldhumanitariansummit.org/file/488680/view/532444> in which the best ideas will be presented at the Pacific Regional Consultation in Auckland. Ideas can be submitted by 5 June 2015 to whs at innovationxchange.dfat.gov.au<mailto:whs at innovationxchange.dfat.gov.au>.
Participate in the Pacific Regional Consultation
Third, if you would like to attend the Consultation, there are a very limited number of places earmarked for academic representatives. Participation will be self-funded. If you would like to attend, we request a 300 word expression of interest and CV to describing how you would contribute to discussions by 31 May sent to Pia.Simonsen at dfat.gov.au<mailto:Pia.Simonsen at dfat.gov.au>.
Share information
Fourth, we seek your assistance in disseminating information about the Summit and innovation exercise throughout your student body and networks, including affected communities and youth. Active and inclusive engagement by diverse stakeholders will be critical to the success of the Summit.
Ms Victoria Wheeler (Victoria.Wheeler at dfat.gov.au<mailto:Victoria.Wheeler at dfat.gov.au>) and Ms Pia Simonsen (Pia.Simonsen at dfat.gov.au<mailto:Pia.Simonsen at dfat.gov.au>) can also provide additional information on the Australian government's participation in the Summit and ways others can be involved.
Your assistance is greatly appreciated as we attempt to improve humanitarian action to save lives, alleviate suffering and maintain human dignity during, and in the aftermath of, disasters.
Yours sincerely,
Rebecca Shaw
