The Opportunity
The Oceania Centre for Arts, Culture and Pacific Studies at the University of the South Pacific is seeking a suitably qualified artist or arts professional to fill a newly created position of Pacific Outreach Programme for Melanesia Coordinator. The position is part of USP’s outreach vision to promote arts education in Melanesian countries through arts programmes, workshops, and school curriculum and community activities. The position will be based at the Solomon Islands Campus in Honiara.
The appointee will be responsible for promoting indigenous and contemporary Melanesian arts and arts education through arts programmes, workshops and community arts activities. The incumbent will work closely with Melanesian governments, schools, and arts organisations, design and teach ,Melanesian arts courses in schools. She/he will work closely with up-coming artists and youths, raise funds for arts programmes, oversee overall administration of Melanesian arts programme and liaise/work closely with the Oceania Centre for Arts, Culture and Pacific Studies.
The Person We Seek
To be considered for this position, applicants must have:
- A Bachelor’s Degree and Postgraduate qualifications (Postgraduate Diploma or Masters) in Pacific Arts focused around Melanesia;
- Extensive knowledge of Melanesian countries, governments, cultures and people;
- Fluency in one or more Melanesian languages;
- The ability to work collaboratively on arts projects with Melanesian governments, schools, arts communities and NGOs;
- Some experience in teaching Melanesian and/or Pacific arts;
- Excellent command of both verbal and written communication in English;
- Ability to work and make decisions independently;
- Ability to meet deadlines;
- Ability to work calmly under pressure;
- Ability to be entrepreneurial in attracting external grants;
- Excellent organisational and record-keeping skills;
- Ability to travel both within the Pacific region and internationally to speak on behalf of Melanesian Arts at conferences, workshops and other arts-related events.
Preference will be given to applicants with:
- An out-going personality;
- The ability to give talks, both formal and informal, to Melanesian governments, schools, arts communities and NGOs.
Remuneration
The position is available for a term of 3 years and may be renewed by mutual agreement.
Salary Range: Band 4 SBD $319691 to SBD $368873 per annum (Inclusive of 15% Gratuity)
