Hi Alan
I'm familiar with the University of Auckland's Pacific languages program.
Four Polynesian languages, Maori, Samoan, Tongan and Cook Is. Maori, are taught there, by staff of the Centre for Pacific Studies, with courses up to 3rd year. The program for Maori is far more extensive than for the other languages, as you would expect, and includes Master's papers and PhD.
There are also two linguistics courses that are part of the program: Languages of the Pacific, and Polynesian Comparative Linguistics, plus a course on poetry of the Pacific Islands.
There's a Maori language program at each of the universities in NZ.
Samoan is taught at Victoria U. of Wellington, at the undergrad. level.
At the Manoa campus of the University of Hawaii, the Indo-Pacific Languages Dept has extensive BA and MA programs in Hawaiian and Samoan. There are 8 faculty listed as teaching Samoan language and culture.
There's also an extensive program in Hawaiian at the Hilo campus.
The Laucala Bay campus of the University of the South Pacific offers a few undergrad courses in Fijian language and culture, in the School of Language, Arts and Media. No other PI language is taught there unless you want to count Hindi, which of course is one of the main languages of Fiji.
I had a look at the UPNG website. There's a Linguistics program but I found no mention of courses in particular PNG languages, not even Tok Pisin.
Tahitian is taught at the Tahiti campus of the U. French Polynesia. Don't know about Noumea. I can ask my French colleagues.
Andy

Subject: [ANU Pacific.Institute] Two queries concerning Pacific language teaching
Dear colleagues,
Miranda and I (as co-convenor) have recently received a request from Stephan Fruehling -chair of a CAP working group on language teaching in CAP - for a submission from the Institute on Pacific language teaching at ANU, with particular reference to:
- national and international offerings of Pacific language teaching
- current activities or interest in Pacific language teaching amongst ANU pacific scholars
- if ANU was to make greater investment in Pacific languages, which languages should be prioritised and why?
In response to this request I am forming a working group to look into these matters and prepare a submission. If any of you wishes to volunteer to serve on that working group please let me know. Your participation would be greatly appreciated.
My second, related query is this. As you can see, one of the tasks we are charged with is to compile information about 'national and international offerings of Pacific language teaching'. Whether or not you would like to serve in the working group, I would greatly appreciate it if you could send me information about any current or recent offerings in Pacific languages that you may know of at universities of other institutions anywhere in the world.
Best regards,
Alan Rumsey
