Dear colleagues,

I write to invite you to attend a conference hosted by Western Sydney University and the University of Sydney's West Papua Project, 'At the Intersection: Pacific Climate Change and Resource Exploitation in West Papua'.

This two-day conference addresses two of the most pressing concerns in the Pacific region today - climate change in the Pacific, and West Papua's resource conflict. It asks, what do these problems have in common, and in what ways might it be useful to address them as two manifestations of a common problem?

The keynote speaker is the Hon Ralph Regenvanu, Minister for Lands and Resources in Vanuatu. We will also hear from climate scientists, international NGO workers in West Papua, West Papuan's working on these issues 'on the ground', and social/political scientists.

The conference will be held at the Female Orphan School (Rooms EZ.G.22 and EZ.G.36) at Parramatta South Campus, Sydney, NSW Australia, on Thursday Nov 3 and Friday Nov 4 (9:00-17:00 each day).

The conference is free but registration is essential: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/at-the-intersection-pacific-climate-change-and-west-papua-tickets-27664162254.

This two-day conference, hosted by Western Sydney University and the West Papua Project examines, for the first time, the multidimensional relationship between the Pacific region's two most pressing concerns - climate change and West Papua's resource-driven conflict. We are thrilled to announce that the conference keynote speaker is the Hon Ralph Regenvanu, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Vanuatu. The Pacific region is at the frontline of anthropogenic, greenhouse gas-instigated climate change. The island of New Guinea, the most bio-diverse island on earth, contains vast swathes of rainforest, the world's third largest after the Amazon and the Congo. The western half of the island of New Guinea-West Papua-though, is losing its forests through legal and illegal logging at breakneck speed and through clearing of land for so-called food and energy estates, while mining of its extensive gold, copper and natural gas resources is taking a huge environmental toll in the highlands and along th
