*Abstract: Financing loss and damage from climate change in Small Island
Developing States*
Loss and damage from climate change was for the first time formally
recognised under the United Nations Convention on Climate Change, following
a strong push from Small Island Developing States for its inclusion.
However, fearing legal ramifications by developed countries, the Paris
Agreement explicitly excludes any liability and compensation as well as any
mandate for funding.
In my project, I will analyse how loss and damage from climate change can
be financed and what options and mechanisms are currently available. I aim
to determine whether these options and mechanisms are suitable for
different aspects of loss and damage such as weather-related natural
disasters, non-economic losses and forced climate migration. I will conduct
interviews with United Nations delegates, national government officials and
representatives from NGOs to compare the actual needs of small island
states with discussions in international negotiations.
