New England to the “South Seas”: Museum collections from Pacific and two centuries of New England relations

Abstract: From as early as the 18th century, the fledgling United States of America was actively exploring and exchanging with the Sea of Islands across the great wide Pacific Ocean. New England, and Massachusetts in particular, played an active and varied role in these explorations, from the China Pacific trade, the Whaling industry, the Foreign Christian ministries, and the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. Dr. Ahlgren will revisit some of these historical legacies, and how museum objects at the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University can shed light on the unique relationships and exchanges between the Pacific and Massachusetts, eliciting and illuminating those stories in engaging ways
