In this panel senior public servants from the education ministries of Fiji, Samoa and Vanuatu will discuss some of the key education challenges facing their countries and the Pacific generally, while also describing recent innovations and future priorities.

Speakers

  *   Mr lati Bergmans is currently the Vanuatu Director General for the Ministry of Education and Training. He is an experienced administrator and has had experience in administrating schools in Vanuatu. He has a Master’s degree in Humanities and Social Sciences from the University of Paris, and is a PhD student in Anthropology at EHESS (Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales) examining the cultural heritage in traditional societies in south Vanuatu.
  *   Mr Timoci Bure is the current Deputy Secretary for Primary and Secondary for the Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts, Fiji, where he provides support and advice to the Permanent Secretary to ensure effective and efficient operations of the ministry at the school, district and divisional levels. A teacher by profession, Mr Bure has held various school leadership roles as Principal of three secondary schools, with extensive experience in providing professional advice to school administrators and teachers on ways to improve academic performance. Having taught at a number of schools with varying natures of economic, social and infrastructural challenges, Mr Bure provides professional advice to school leaders on how to cope and address such challenges.
  *   Afamasaga Dr Karoline Fuata’i is currently on her second term as the Chief Executive Officer for the Ministry of Education Sports and Culture, Samoa. Afamasaga is a teacher by profession, she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of the South Pacific, and later a Masters and PhD in Mathematics Education majoring in Computer Science and Curriculum Instruction from Cornell University in the United States. She previously served as an Associate Professor for Mathematics at the University of New England in Australia and a founding Professor for Mathematics Education at the National University of Samoa.
This session will be chaired by Anna Gibert.

  *   Anna Gibert has been working for almost 15 years in the Pacific to support locally-driven reform and leadership, specifically in the education and skills sector. She has worked on a variety of DFAT-funded development projects including acting as Team Leader for the Vanuatu Skills Partnership, widely recognised as a stand-out example of sector reform with transformative social and economic impact.
