A Preliminary Analysis of Ipiko Phonology and Grammar

“Ipiko is a Papuan language spoken in Gulf province, Papua New Guinea (mainly two villages). It belongs to the Inland Gulf subgroup (sole representative), Anim group, Trans New Guinea language family. The research and investigation of the Ipiko language is its initial phase. My TPR talk concerns general phonological and grammatical systems; this attempt shows the overall limits of the language. The language is head marking: core arguments are not marked and all obliques are marked by the same enclitical/postclitical morpheme; the verb is attached by both clitics and affixes which can express person of core arguments; the language is characterised by the rich temporal and aspectual system which is marked by three different suffixal morphemes.

Segmental phonology is pretty straightforward with 18 phonemes, but the suprasegmental level shows phonologically relevant tonal opposition. My presentation mostly aims to outline the initial descriptive level: the basic phonological and grammatical structure and the difficulties that can hinder the understanding of the system of the language.” – Zurab Baratashvili
