Hi all,
Annual General Meeting
The ANU Sailing Club 2004 AGM will be held at 1930 Wednesday 17th March. >From 5pm the clubhouse will be open giving you the opportunity to go for a sail in a supervised environment. This will be followed by a free BBQ and the AGM.
The major task for the AGM is the election of the 2004 committee. With older committee members graduating and moving on the club really needs new blood on the committee.
If you are interested in nominating for a committee position contact me (Garrick Larkin Club Secretary on u3299815 at anu.edu.au , 0404 292 691).
Six Simple Steps to getting actively involved in the ANUSC (and meet a lot of people and have a lot of fun)!
1) Turn up to social events (eg Coast Trip to Tuross 27-28th March). Trips like this are an excellent way to meet other club members. You can swap details to organise to sail together or turn up to future events.
2) Turn up to training courses to help out (tonight 1700-2000, this Sunday 7th March 1000-1800, next Monday and Wednesday 1700-2000). Even if you aren't an experienced sailor you can still help out and you will meet a lot of people.
3) Turn up to regattas (eg Canberra Teams Championship Sat 13 March). In sailing the most important requirement for a crew is weight so even if you have never been on a boat before there are opportunities to get involved with racing.
4) Organise your own events. Organise your own events by inviting friends and other club members to go sailing with you.
5) Organise club events. If you want to organise anything from twilight sailing, attending an interstate regatta or social Go Karting the committee will support you. You decide what the club needs and help make it happen.
6) Join the committee. Committee members are in the loop with what is coming up, get a clubhouse key and priority for racing boats.
Why you should get involved!
The club is currently offering what is probably the BEST SAILING DEAL IN AUSTRALIA. For just $20 membership you get free unlimited unsupervised boat use. If you are an experienced member you can even take the boats interstate to regattas and if you are going away to race the club will even pay your race entry! This is a FRACTION of the real cost of owning a boat as evidenced by the fact that the CYC charges $35 per hour to hire a Laser and they are a non-profit organisation just trying to cover costs.
The club cannot continue to offer such a good deal unless the club has a large increase in volunteers. An increase in active members makes the club a much better place with more sailing events and more social events therefore attracting more members. Active members also help financially by allowing us to run training courses (therefore raising more money ourselves), maintain our equipment ourselves (saving our money for more important things), attend more competitions (justifying more SRA funding) and do a better job of financially and otherwise administering the club (therefore justifying to the SRA that we are a worthy club for their funding).
With nearly 150 members in 2004 the club had our largest membership in many years making us around the 3rd biggest ANU sporting club. However many members are inactive and in 2005 the club needs more active members than ever before. Unless the club gets more active members to help run the club in 2004 we will not be able to continue to provide the same deal in 2005. The club is quickly heading for the same style of system that other university sailing clubs use. That is you pay whenever you use the boats and the boats are only available on weekends when somebody is there to supervise.
After Sailing Drinks
After the sailing course session tonight (Wednesday) at around 8pm there will be after sailing drinks at the Canberra Yacht Club. This is an excellent opportunity for YOU to meet the clubs new members. This will provide the opportunity for you to get to know other members of the club so that you can organise to sail together or even line up crews for regattas.
Although the Lasers and Tasars will be used for the course the opportunity is there to turn up early and take a Windsurfer, Sharpie or the Yacht out for a sail.
Turn up to the clubhouse before 8pm or meet us at the CYC.
If you have any questions ring Todd 0401 016 243 or Garrick 0404 292 691.
