[ANU Pacific.Institute] PNG Art on Campus - 2017 Exhibition Reminder

To: ANU Pacific Institute members and friends,

This is  a gentle reminder that we are asking if people would like to lend recent PNG art works to see if we can put together exhibition on ANU campus. If you would like to assist, could you please send JPEG photos to Sam Bashfield (samuel.bashfield at anu.edu.au) this month. That will help us get the whole process started and help us find a venue.

To date five people have made offers - all of which include Kauage paintings or drawings! Mathias Kauage died in 2003, and some of his work will clearly be in any exhibition we hold.  But there have been major changes in PNG art practice since then, and many more artists, which is why this exhibition is planned 'to mostly be confined to recent (post 2000) works', as discussed in my 'survey letter' attached.

Incidentally, several members of the Institute have been able to see the current exhibition of PNG art 'No.1 Neighbour' at Queensland Art Gallery, South Brisbane, a massive and exciting survey of works from the last 50 years which finishes on 29 January. There is a glorious colourful catalogue produced by the curator, Ruth McDougall, now for $32. Her opening publicity article is attached. There are also five articles with great pix in the gallery's Artlines magazine 3-2016 Sept/Oct/Nov;  $7.95.

Obviously we won't be able to hold anything on that scale at ANU, but we should be able to bring together a range of recent works which show aspects of PNG art and life never before shown in this city.
