Dear All,

We are looking for two "year-in-industry" students to work with us on the
following project:
*	The scholarship program is administered by ANSTO and the successful
candidate will receive a stipend of $26,250 (inclusive of tax and
superannuation) for 1764 hours within a 12 month period.

Natural archives of human activity and climate variability
This stream of the project will focus on the use of natural archives to
study whether human impact can be distinguished from climate variability
over the last 50-100 years. It will utilise various techniques, including
isotope dating techniques (eg. 210Pb, 137Cs, 14C, 7Be), microfossil
analyses, trace element analyses and stable isotope analyses.
Initially, the research team will attempt to establish a base-line climate
description for the region (prior to 150 years ago). Secondly they will
examine the climate variability as deduced from the proxies found in
sediment records (eg. geochemical and microfossil indicators). Several sites
will be carefully chosen to ensure that they are sensitive recorders of
climate variability and human impact. The sites will ideally have
undisturbed sediments with a high rate of deposition to ensure a good
resolution. Sites will range from pristine sites, with a climate variability
signal only, to sites with a mixture of human impact and climate
variability. Research will be carried out by an ANSTO interdivisional team
on isotope techniques and proxies will be studied by University
collaborators. This research has been identified in the federal governments
Greenhouse strategy document.
To date, sites have been selected from Tasmania, Victoria and New South
Wales. ANSTO scientists together with several university students and
researchers are currently analysing sediment cores extracted from these
sites.

You will have completed at least the second year of
your degree by the end of 2001 and have at least one full year of your
studies to complete.
*	If successful, you must be able to provide evidence either of
continued enrolment at your University or permission to defer for the
purposes of taking up the ANSTO scholarship.
*	Your University must have signed or will need to sign an agreement
with ANSTO as a participating university.
*	You must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or hold a
valid visa.
