The University of Cambridge has kindly agreed to make a Portuguese for Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences Researchers course available to students and researchers outside of their University, subject to sufficient interest. This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in Timor-Leste who needs to use Portuguese sources , as there is no equivalent course offered in Australia.
This Reading Portuguese course will be offered via Zoom, so you can join classes from anywhere in the world, and the content will be similar to their regular Portuguese for Academic Purposes course for their own students and academics (description below). The cost will be £350 for a 15 weeks course of 15 x 90min sessions. They will need 15-20 students in order to run the course.
If you are interested, please contact the Centre Administrator, Mr. Agajevs, directly at culp at langcen.cam.ac.uk . Once they collect the required number, they can schedule the course and open enrolment.
kind regards,

Portuguese for Academic Purposes (LAP) for Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences Researchers
One 90 minute lesson weekly.
Portuguese LAP courses are designed for researchers, postgraduate students and staff who have a particular interest in Latin American, Brazilian, Portuguese or Lusophone language, culture and heritage.
They offer linguistic tools that will enable students to understand complex texts, produce critical readings and interpretations and develop the oral skills needed for fieldwork.
The classes are going to be conducted primarily in English, even though there will be plenty of opportunity for oral and listening practice in Portuguese.
The Portuguese language is spoken on four continents in countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America, and it is the official language in eight countries: Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, Cape Verde and East Timor.
Despite its regional variations, standard Portuguese is understood by all native speakers and enables non-native speakers to communicate effectively whether in Brazil, Portugal or any other lusophone country.
Throughout the Portuguese Language course at CULP you will be exposed to audios, videos and written texts in both European and Brazilian variants of the language. There will be clarifications related to lexical, grammatical and phonetic differences between variants according to each proficiency level.
If you already have some experience in any of the variants, please note that both Brazilian and European Portuguese will be accepted in spoken and written productions as long as consistency is maintained.
The Basic LAP course does not require any knowledge of the language, while the prerequisite for Intermediate LAP is a CEFR A2 level or equivalent standard.
The courses offer the possibility of progression and Basic LAP students are strongly encouraged to continue with the Intermediate LAP course.
Please note that these courses are attended by Spanish-speaking students of Latin American studies and that the pace of the classes is likely to be fast. Although this might be challenging, it can also be very rewarding and conducive to sound progress.
The course will start from a Basic level and will aim to:
* Solidify reading strategies of academic texts;
* Develop students' familiarity with compositional structures of texts;
* Enable students to identify basic Portuguese grammar units in use.
Students will be asked to perform weekly readings of a wide variety of texts.
Alongside that, they will be requested to do grammar exercises related to the basic structures of the language (verbs, complements, etc.).
