Joseph E. Stiglitz[1] has just written an editorial[2] in the British
Medical Journal called "Scrooge and Intellectual Property Rights" in
which he claims that not only do medical patents cost many lives,
they do not achieve the purpose (i.e. as incentive for research) that
allegedly justifies granting them.
he also says that medical prize funds would be a better way of
encouraging research into treatments for disease.
