Karl, it wasn't a *failure* to de-couple the local loop from the
privatisation, it was *deliberate*.
i.e. it wasn't just stupidity, it was malice.
(stupid ideological malice, but malice all the same)
they can't even legitimately pretend that they didn't know what problems
it would cause - everyone else aside from Telstra & the Lib/Nat govt
were shouting it as loud as they possibly could.
doesn't stop them from pretending anyway, same as they did re: the
invasion of iraq. everyone except Bush and his intl. sycophants were
predicting *exactly* what is happening now (i.e. that it would be a
bonanza recruitment drive for loony islamic-fascist terrorists, and that
Iran would be the ultimate winner).
and same as the current govt is focusing on irrelevant trivial bullshit
like excessive executive salaries rather than the indisputable fact
that the current economic crisis is the direct and inevitable result of
entrenched, systematic fraud and greed throughout the entire financial
industry (the $50Bn pyramid scam being just the most obvious example to
emerge so far). this wasn't something that took everybody by surprise,
it was a hot potato that somebody(*) finally got stuck with.
(*) the tax paying public for the most part, with the multiple trillions
of dollars in bailouts being proposed and even implemented around the
world.

i dunno about that. i'd reckon that "corrupt" and "criminal" are
powerful enough words to describe what happened.
