There's a strong parallel with some radio programmes:
those old-fashioned gardening shows in the days before
talk-back where they'd answer readers letters and talk
about events of significance within their small community.

This isn't to mean that good podcasts are derived from
radio programmes, even if they see themselves in the
tradition of radio. Take LUGradio, a podcast-only show
by people totally unconnected with the radio industry.

LUGradio is a worth a listen just to see how far from
radio a podcast can get. It would never be on the
airwaves. Commercially it interests too few people.
Regulatory it is profane and disses other cultures
(ie. anyone not a UK-living Linux user). As a podcast
it is massively successful --- it supports its own
annual conference LUGradio Live.
