You don't have to, and you can. There are plenty of near silent
computer options to choose from in a variety of form factors that are
fine as media centres. And you can get them with cases that look just
like a bit of high-end Hi-Fi gear if you want to.

Personally I would have one PC setup at home for storing all my files,
music, video etc anyway and yes it is a little more complexity to make
this a media centre but I prefer to have one technology to manage and
the flexibility to add features as I need them. As to useful - unless
you have no hobbies or interests that aren't all actively saving the
planet or building better communities - how about we agree that
everyone wastes some time on something or another ...

I am not ramming media centres down anyone's throat and may decide to
go for a black box in the future.It is my choice to decide how I spend
what amounts to a little of my time. Now my media center is setup I
actually spend very little time fiddling and most of the time using
it, as does my wife.

I meets my needs for now.
