In fact, let's get more fundamental. Do we need such sophistication in the
first place?

Why not stick with a simpler system and spend the $ on ticket inspectors?

Here in Frankfurt the load / unload times of trains, trams and buses are
incredibly quick due to no checking of tickets. Ingress / egress points at
stations and terminals are likewise totally unimpeded.

Instead they rely on regular and pervasive ticket inspections onboard the
vehicles. It's not uncommon for my ticket to be checked 2-3 times per week.
In Sydney I would have been surprised if my ticket was checked 2-3 times per
year.

It's a relatively low-tech system but seems to keep fare evasion under
control.
