Take a look at the Whirlpool VoIP forum to get up to speed.
The easiest way to stick a toe in the water is with MyNetfone's
Whirlpool special.
They will sell you a box that plugs into your LAN on one side with a
standard PSTN port on the other for about $30.
You can be up and running making calls in a few minutes and see if it
is worthwhile without any changing ISPs or similar required.
