Always an interesting philosophical standpoint: for the greater good etc. 

Given the choice between making a mess of the world and living well, or not making a mess and living with more grit, it's easy to see why people are less interested in making the world a better place for our children's children, or beyond. 

We simply don't see the effect of making poor choices until it's too late.
