Or maybe I'm just a wuss and not prepared to arbitrarily condemn
random people to death (or a significantly increased chance of it).

Well, yes, history is filled with examples of that.

Anyway, while energy consumption is a serious issue, a far more
serious issue is the lack of clean energy sources currently available.
