Opposition shifts ground on Telstra split

THE Coalition has formally shifted its policy on splitting Telstra, 
arguing the company has accepted the inevitability of the move.
 
The shift came as Julia Gillard reintroduced to parliament previously 
rejected legislation splitting Telstra in two, and demanding Coalition 
support to deliver consumers better services through the NBN.

The government's move to split Telstra would allow the company to work 
with the NBN Co to build the network, leaving its retail arm free to 
compete with other providers in selling broadband.

Telstra released a statement yesterday backing the Labor legislation in 
the interests of shareholders.

"On balance we support the passage of the bill," Telstra chief executive 
David Thodey said.  (snipped)
