My EPUB Ebook has a table of contents and End Notes.
The EPUB standard is still evolving and may ofcourse fail, in favour, of
another ebook format.
I did the table of contents manually, in HTML, but there is only a one way
link into the book,not backwards.
There are now 40 references, many to NLA's newspapers online clicking on
their cite button copying and pasting their harvard style reference, which
includes a URL
The Endnotes were originally generated by Open Office and work both ways -
into end notes and back to text of book. I have added some further endnotes
to the HTML, which means the numbering has to be done manually.
I don't think the sequence, of end notes, is important if there is a
dynamic link both ways, but it is important in the paperback version.
HTML is not good for end/foot note management.
The EPUB has its own table of contents markup. The E-Book Reader buttons
and EPUB table of contents only seems to work between files, not within a
file.
I hear commercial EBooks provide very little navigation, many are just
electronic versions of a paper book.
I am working on the paperback and am currently aiming to generate the EPUB
and Paperback from the same source HTML. Open Office has no problem
generating the table of contents from the H1-H3 in the HTML.
I used Google's Firefox/Chrome plugin to read my ebook.
Note my epub (zip package) contains both a XHTML and EPUB TOC see file
structure here:
