There's a lot of conjecture about the end of OS X, but there are also
some very good reasons why it may not be as imminent as many people
think. I discussed this with a friend (who may be reading this thread
and should feel free to chime in at any time) the other week. The two
main reasons we concluded for OS X or an heir to it continuing are:
1) As a development platform for the iOS stuff. Currently Xcode is
not available on iOS, you need OS X and Xcode to create all those apps
for iPhones and iPads.
2) Apple has spent a long time cornering certain niche markets with
OS X and various applications. One of the better examples being the
film and music industries, particularly for software like Final Cut
Pro, Logic Studio and Pro Tools. These things need real hardware with
a real operating system and a phone or a tablet just isn't going to
cut it.
It may be that Apple shifts its marketing again so that the
iOS/iPhone/iPad users get targetted as consumers and the OS X (or
whatever it becomes) remains BSD based and is targetted at the
professional users (in the context of needing the hardware and OS for
what they do).

Ben
