Hi Anthony,
I'm in the same boat - many of my clients are teaching associations, and they have been using the ESA (used to be EdNA) mailing lists. I've been using EdNA / ESA lists since around '95 or '96, and it has been an extremely useful service for teaching association. Regrettably, this service is being shut down in December.

The best alternative I've been able to find for discussion lists so far is is http://www.mailmanlist.net/
They have two options for lists - Regular (yourlist at mailmanlist.net) or Pro (yourlist at lists.yourdomainname). The pro version costs $1.50 per month more than the regular option. Prices for regular lists vary from $5.00 per month (up to 1,000 subscribers) to $15 per month (up to 10,000 subscribers).

For announce-only lists MailChimp is worth considering - there is a free option for less than 2000 members on a list.

Cheers, Peter
