In celebration of the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s launching of its most recent voyage around the world in its two canoes, Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia, the Micronesian & Australian Friends Association (MAFA) is hosting their latest movie night (TOMORROW!), featuring the film The Navigators: Pathfinders of the Pacific.

The first major film about Papa Mau’s sailing revival – from 1983 – follows anthropologist Sam Low and archaeologists as they seek clues to the origins and achievements of ancient Polynesian seafarers. It shows the excavation of a powerful voyaging canoe on the Tahitian island of Huahine, early sailing routes in Fiji, and traces of Hawaii's first settlers on Molokai. Sam Low visits Satawal, in Yap State, and travels with Mau Piailug as he and his crew sail a replica of an original Polynesian canoe from Hawaii to Tahiti – in the famous and ground-breaking 2500 mile voyage across the ocean without benefit of sextant, compass, or any other Western navigational instrument.
