Second call for Recent PNG art works for exhibition in September 2019
A small working group is preparing this project, convened by Bill Standish at request of the Pacific Institute.
We received a number of loan offers from our first mailout letter in December 2016 seeking to borrow recent Papua New Guinea artworks, and now have about 60 objects for the exhibition which will be held in September-October 2019 at the School of Art Gallery.
One aim of this exhibition is to show works by artists not well known in Canberra. We have several Mathias Kauage paintings, early and recent, and early drawings by him and Akis, so do not need more of theirs.
We are now getting more specific in seeking out art works, specifically those created after the year 2000. We have compiled a list of artists we would especially like to include but are also open to new suggestions. Note that we may not necessarily accept offers and suggestions due to space constraints and the already established themes of the show.
Dr Anna Edmundson of the Centre of Digital Humanities Research (who is a professional curator and an academic) is working on the project. As well as the exhibition, the project now includes an international symposium to be held at the time of the exhibition, and we will produce a digital catalogue which we hope will be based both at the PNG Museum and Art Gallery, and at ANU.
We are grateful for funds which have been allocated to these projects. We have already received $1500 support grants from the Pacific Institute at ANU and a major grant of $14,444 allocated from the College of Asia and Pacific in an Asia Pacific Innovation Project (APIP) grant. We are exploring other possible sources of funding for this ambitious project.
At this stage, we are seeking works from the following artists:
