Travel Reports

Richard Baker visited the Uni of Tasmania Geography Dept on Friday 
August 25th to give a presentation as part of their seminar series on 
"The Thing about Islands".

Peter Kanowski - Timber Queensland workshop, Brisbane, 18 August
Timber Queensland, the industry organisation for timber growers and 
processors in Qld, has an agenda to expand Qld's plantation forestry 
estate and industries, consequent to policy decisions over the past 5 
years to phase out timber harvesting from many of Qld's public native 
forests. TQ are developing a strategy for forest plantation industry 
development; as part of that process, I facilitated a workshop of 40 
participants on that topic in Brisbane on 18 August. There was good 
representation of government (eg State Minister, Premier's Dept, 
DAFF, Qld forest agencies, local government), the forest industries 
(eg Hyne, Weyerhauser, MIS companies), and other key stakeholders (eg 
Aila Keto, as a leading conservationist; Macquarie Bank, as corporate 
financier ...). As with most such workshops, some steps forward, a 
few sideways, etc ... Happy to discuss further/ provide more info for 
anyone interested. TQ paid all costs.

Institute of Foresters' forum on forestry education, U Melbourne, 23 August
This forum was organised by U Melb students; 3 ANU forestry students 
- Amy Davidson, Heath Frewin & Robyn Sakkara - and I participated and 
spoke. Amongst the main points of discussion were U Melb's 
introduction of 6 generalist undergrad degrees, with professional 
education shifted to graduate (fee paying) programs, and the ANU + 
Melb+Tas + SCU proposal for a joint graduate coursework forestry 
program. Also happy to discuss further with those interested. Costs 
from my Q a/c.
