Dear PI friends and colleagues,
As many of you benefit from and support the ABC's Pacific broadcasting
efforts, please consider individually or with a few colleagues putting in a
submission to voice your support and ideas for the future of broadcasting
services and content for the Pacific region. The more submissions the
better! If you don't feel comfortable writing a whole submission, then
you're welcome to send comments to me or Jemima directly. I'm sure any
notes about past services or stories that have had important impacts that
you're aware of would be welcome, or ideas and identified areas of
technological/programmatic needs for the future.
Thanks in advance and all the best,
Katherine

Subject: Latest - your help please - new possibilities for ABC Pacific
broadcasting!
To:

Hi friends and colleagues,

Your help when ABC Radio Australia suffered big cuts in 2014 has not been
forgotten.

Now, there is an Australian government Review offering the best chance yet
of rebuilding ABC Pacific broadcasting - hopefully on a model of greater
partnership with the region and its journalists and creative people.

The Review has wide terms of reference and is seeking the views of people,
organisations and institutions in the region as well as Australia.

Outrage from the Pacific (including from Vanuatu's Prime Minister) over the
axing of shortwave broadcasts in 2017 led to this Review. Now China has
taken over frequencies once operated by the ABC there is more political
will to do something to rebuild the ABC's capabilities.

*What is needed is a loud voice from the Pacific and Asia and from
Australia, including from diaspora communities.*

This is a chance to think big to create an innovative partnership with the
region to deliver a range of specialist programs made for Pacific
audiences. This could include co-pros and jobs for Pacific journalists and
creatives, greater involvement of Pasifika communities in ABC broadcasting
and more.

*Please have your say* - either* by putting in a submision* to the review
or *sending your comments to me in a return email* for me to include in the
submission being put together our new group 'Supporters of Australian
broadcasting in Asia and the Pacific'.

There is quite a bit of background to the submission and you might have
some questions about technology so I have attached some background material
below.

Thanks very much for your help again.

Please feel free to share this email far and wide and ask as many people as
possible to contirbute their thoughts and ideas.

If anyone has queries please get in touch with me 0408 163226

Warm regards,

Jemima
